this morning. it's a big development in the fight against syria and a new level of u.s. involvement. we just learned within the past few hours the defense secretary leon panetta signed an order sending two patriot missile batteries to turkey. that's to assist that nation in defending against any pollible military action by syria. this move was expected as the civil war in syria destabilizes the assad regime with each passing day. in addition to this, 400 u.s. troops are going to turkey. they will be deployed to operate the missile batteries. cnn's nick payton walsh has the development. >> reporter: good morning. 400 personnel will be accompanying the batteries. let me give you history. over the past two months, we saw sporadic exchanges of fire across the border. syrian military firing into turkey causing often destruction and death. turkey often responding. that brought about this request to nato for patriot missile batteries. they're supposed to be there. this particular type better at taking out missiles in the sky rather than taking down aircraft. but this move part of a nato response. a

and that gunman is dead. as police have been telling us now, 20 children dead, 18 of them dead at the scene. and in addition to that, six adults are also dead, including the principal of the school. we understand that yet another adult was found dead at another location that police are not officially disclosing as of yet. and we are told that the mother of the suspected shooter, who is also dead at the scene, was also killed. she is a teacher and she was also killed at that school, according to our law enforcement sources. in addition to this, we are also told by our sources that another person is being questioned at this time but is not being called a suspect right now, and also that person is not being identified, wolf. so while the school is being called secure and safe by law enforcement authorities right now, they are -- they still have a lot of investigating to do. they have not officially released the name of the shooter or the other person being questioned or the names of any of the victims at this time. it's just an awful scene, and parents found out about this, wolf, when they rec

happening at sandy hook elementary school on dickerson drive. this is coming to us from one of our affiliates. police are reporting a number of injuries. the nature of the injuries at this point are unclear. we're going to be checking that throughout the morning. state police sources say that one person is dead. earlier reports of a second shooter. that has not been confirmed at this point. a few more reports, apparently the shooting was reported shortly after 9:40 a.m. this morning. police reported that a shooter was in the -- apparently in the main office. >> which is hard to tell with this image that we're looking at because that's sort of bird's-eye view of the school layout doesn't show where that is. we should mention that one of the tv stations that has been reporting on this was told by a witness that she saw two children, one with a bloody face and the other with what appeared to be a hand injury. again, that coming in to news 8, one of the local stations in the area. >> that falls in step with one of the reports that we're hearing, that a person in one of the rooms has, q

the world. thanks for joining us. a sobering reminder of how america's war is still not won. we still do not have a secure afghanistan. today, just hours after i wrapped up an interview with the secretary of defense leon panetta in kandahar at an american base, there was a a brazen attack just outside the bias. the suicide bomber struck, the taliban took responsibility. an american soldier has within killed. two afghan soldiers were killed. americans and afghans were wounded in this attack today. a taliban spokesman not only claimed responsibility for the attack but praised the quote unquote brave taliban fighter who carried it out. also, here in kabul, secretary panetta met with karzai and invited him it meet with president obama next month. the key question for the leaders is where do things now stand and what's next? 11 years, two months and six days. >> we will not tire, we will not faulter, and we will not fail. >> peace and freedom will prevail. >> just one month after 9/11 wbt war against the taliban and al qaeda and afghanistan, it has been steep, more than 2,000 americans dead a

shooting. police told us a number of people have been shot at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut, about 60 miles north of new york. first calls coming into police around 9:40 local time this morning. children were being evacuated, the schools in the area all on lockdown. now, we have learned that the shooter is dead. we are also hearing multiple local reports of fatalities. i want to go to our cnn's jason carroll for the very latest. first of all, outline if you will how many people we know are dead, who has been killed, and who has been injured. >> well, first of all, let's go back to the beginning. we started to receive reports at about 9:40 a.m. that's when police, suzanne, reported that a shooter was in the, quote, main office of the school. at that point we had also heard a report that a person in one room had numerous gunshot wounds. this coming to us from one of our affiliates there. our susan candiotti has confirmed through one of her sources that someone has been shot, the alleged gunman involved in the shooting at the school, and that two weapons were recov
